Over the past few years they have really stepped-up their map DLC releases and I just see them as continuing that work but on a more regular basis and will eventually make something like ProMods obsolete.

I think the creation of an official multiplayer game or update to the current games would require too much work for SCS and they prefer to just work on the core game and improve upon that. Then somehow through the World of Trucks integration, allow users to hop from continent to continent (or game to game if you will) via ferries or planes. I think the ultimate goal is to achieve a World Truck Simulator but this will most likely just be ETS 2 and the continuation of map DLC's plus ATS and possibly some other countries/continents released as standalone games (such as Australian Truck Simulator, although that may be named Oz Truck Simulator to avoid confusion with the current ATS, or South American Truck Simulator etc).
